Royal jelly

141Ñ…141.jpgRoyal jelly has been used as medicine since ancient times. In the Middle Ages it was considered panacea for all diseases. Royal jelly is a type of bee secretion that is used to feed larvae for the first three days and to feed the queen larvae at all stages of her development and during its reproduction period. The queens and worker bees are genetically identical and only differences in the older larvae’s diet influence the superiority (dominance) of the queen bee.

Extraction technology

Nowadays the extraction technology is based on the moving of newborn larvae from the working bees’ cells to the natural compartments intended for queen breeding. The frames with the moved larvae are located in the special “breeding” bee family. The number of larvae accepted as queens-to-be (60–70%) depends on the beekeepers’ experience and the physiological state of the colony. After two and a half days the frames are taken out and the royal jelly is extracted from the queen cells built on the cups. One queen cell usually contains about 250–300 mg of royal jelly. Because of this, royal jelly production is a highly labour-intensive process, but the end product is worth it.

Composition

Like any full-fledged food product royal jelly contains water, fat, protein, carbohydrate, minerals and vitamins:

  • Humidity 57-70%
  • Protein 17-45%
  • Sugar 18-52%
  • Lipid 3,5 – 19%
  • Ash 2-3%
Organoleptic Properties

Royal jelly is a homogeneous substance with the consistency of a fairly liquid paste. It is white in colour with yellow or beige tinges. It has specific sour-sweet, burning flavour.

Therapeutic Activity

Royal jelly produces an evident antioxidant effect. It has a hypolipidemic effect reducing the risk of atherosclerosis, primary hypertension and stroke. Royal jelly is also known as an adaptogen. It enhances physiological and psychological stress tolerance levels. It produces regenerating, antimicrobial and immunomodulating effects.

Royal Jelly is a wonderful biostimulant. It normalizes metabolic processes, increases the enzymatic activity, improves trophic tissues and regulates cellular nutrition, vascular tone, hormonal activity, accelerates the normal development of the body, promotes diminishing of angiospasm, regulates the functions of a disordered nervous system, lowers cholesterol and triglycerides in blood, corrects the balance of electrolytes and catecholamines in tissues of vascular walls. It is rich in biologically active substances required for the normalization of the hormonal and enzymatic functions. It is related to immunoregulative modulators, stimulates blood formation, protective functions of the body, increases stamina, speeds up the excretion of toxins, including heavy metals. It also possesses anti-radiation properties.

Thus royal jelly is a unique beekeeping product that defines the differentiation between the queen’s and worker bees’ development. It contains 400 ingredients that can be successfully used for normalizing various functions of the human body. Royal jelly composition defines its high dietary, therapeutic and preventative value. Its great potential outlines the need for further research of its beneficial biological properties and finding new ways for its successful use in complementary medicine.
