Hive

8553_141x141.jpgBee nest consists of vertical double-sided cells. Life of bees is inseparable from the cells, which they build out with their allotted wax for storing of food and housing of brood.

Each cell consists of a common vertical mediastinum on both sides of which there are hexagonal cells. Layers of cells in the nest are always upright. The thickness of the cells for the production of brood is 24-25 mm. The bees leave from 10 to 12 mm of free space (street) between the cells.

Cells have a regular hexagonal shape. The bottom of a cell consists of three rhombs, angled so that they form a prism, deepening the cell. Bottom of each cell on one side serves as bottom parts of three cells on the other side

Cells are divided by the structure into several types:

  • Bee type - for growing worker bees, folding and storing them in honey and Perga;
  • Drone type - for growing drones and storing honey (bees avoid storing beebread in them), drone cells are larger, compared with bee cells;
  • Queen type - special cells for growing queen bees. Usually they are built out of cells, often adhering to cells and being their continuation, rarely separately (e.g. on a bar of the frame);
  • Transition type - cells of irregular shape, which bees build in the transition from bee type to drone type, usually at the top and side bars of the framework, as well as sealing damaged cells;
  • Honey type - usually at the top of the cells. They have an elongated shape and a noticeable upward slope.
Cells of different bee breeds vary, because each breed has a particular size of the worker bee.
Cells are directed slightly upward (4-5 degrees; in particular, the mechanism of radial honey extractor is based on this principle). Construction of cells goes from the top to the bottom. Bees are always taking care of the integrity of cells. Newly built combs are of light colour and they get darker over time.
